What is Radial Shockwave Therapy?

Radial Shockwave Therapy (also known as Radial Pressure Wave Therapy) is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured or painful tissues. These pressure waves are delivered through the skin to the affected area using a specialised handheld device.

The therapy promotes blood flow, reduces pain, breaks down scar tissue, and encourages the body’s natural healing processes. It is especially effective for chronic conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments.

This technology has been widely used in physiotherapy and sports medicine for decades and is supported by clinical research for a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

Is it right for me?

Radial Shockwave Therapy may be suitable if you're dealing with chronic pain or a stubborn musculoskeletal condition that hasn’t improved with rest, exercise, or other conservative treatments. It's commonly used to treat:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow

  • Patellar (knee) tendinopathy

  • Gluteal tendinopathy

  • Shoulder tendon issues (including calcific tendinopathy)

  • Myofascial trigger points

  • Delayed healing of superficial bone injuries (in early stages)

This treatment is ideal for people who are looking to avoid injections or surgery and want to support the body’s natural recovery processes. During your initial assessment, we’ll determine if shockwave therapy is appropriate based on your specific condition, medical history, and treatment goals. It’s not suitable for everyone, for example, if you're pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or have had a recent cortisone injection at the treatment site.

What does it cost?

Radial Shockwave Therapy is a cost-effective, non-invasive treatment that delivers strong clinical results often without the risks, downtime, or expenses associated with injections or surgery.

Typically, we recommend an initial course of 3 to 4 sessions to assess your response. If you experience a positive effect, we usually suggest a further 3 to 4 sessions to achieve full recovery, although this can vary depending on the condition and your individual response.

How the pricing works:

You can choose from two options:

  • Standalone Shockwave Sessions:
These are shorter (10–15 minute) appointments focused solely on delivering shockwave therapy. They are more affordable and ideal for clients already following a rehab plan or not requiring reassessment.

  • Integrated with Physiotherapy Consultation:
Shockwave can also be delivered as part of a full-length physiotherapy appointment. In this case, a small surcharge applies to cover the use of the device. Shockwave machines are highly specialised, requiring ongoing maintenance, calibration, and clinical servicing to ensure safe and effective results.

Private Health Fund & Medicare Rebates Available:

  • Private health insurance rebates apply when cover includes physiotherapy.

  • Eligible patients under the GP Chronic Condition Management Plan can also use their Medicare rebates, as all shockwave sessions are delivered by an AHPRA-registered physiotherapist.

In short, shockwave therapy offers great value, especially compared to more invasive interventions. It’s a clinically supported, low-risk solution to help you get back to doing what you love, faster.

What Results Can I Expect?

Many patients begin to notice improvements in pain levels and mobility within 2 to 3 sessions, with more significant changes occurring after the full course of treatment. Radial Shockwave Therapy is particularly effective for chronic conditions that have been resistant to other approaches, such as rest, exercise, or manual therapy alone.

Results vary depending on the severity and duration of the condition, but clinical studies have shown that shockwave therapy can lead to:

  • Reduced pain intensity

  • Improved tissue healing and blood flow

  • Greater functional movement and activity levels

  • Lower recurrence rates when combined with exercise rehab

Because the therapy works by stimulating your body’s natural repair mechanisms, the effects continue to build even after the treatment sessions are completed. For many clients, improvements are long-lasting—especially when supported by a tailored rehabilitation program.

We’ll track your progress closely and adapt your treatment as needed to give you the best chance of a successful outcome.

How Do I Get Started, and What’s the Experience Like?

Getting started with Radial Shockwave Therapy is simple. If you're new to our clinic, we begin with a comprehensive physiotherapy consultation to assess your condition, discuss your goals, and determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for you. If you're a returning client, and we've already confirmed your diagnosis and treatment plan, you may be eligible to begin shockwave sessions straight away. Currently only available in our Robina location.

You can book online, call us directly, or request a callback through our contact form. Appointments are available as dedicated shockwave sessions or integrated into standard physiotherapy consults—we’ll help you choose what best fits your needs.

From your first visit, you’ll be cared for by a qualified physiotherapist who will explain the process clearly, ensure you feel comfortable, and adjust the treatment based on your response. Most patients describe the treatment as a strong tapping or pulsing sensation, which can be intense over sensitive areas but is usually well tolerated and short in duration.

We pride ourselves on offering an environment where you feel listened to and confident in your care. Our goal is to help you return to what matters most—whether that’s sport, work, or simply moving without pain.
